In the early 1990s, IBM created a system for their Thinkpad laptop computers to diagnose and repair many common hardware problems. The system is called Hardware Maintenance Diskette. It was released in 1994 and revised in 1997 under version 2.xx. The Software Package I have compiled includes the following: Hardware Maintenance Diskette v2.07 - This is a bootable CD image that includes DOS drivers for many Thinkpad models from 1991 to 1998, as well as diagnostic tools for detecting common issues with hard drives, video cards, power supplies, batteries etc... Thinkpad Hardware Maintenance Diskette v1.76 - This is a read-only floppy disk image containing the original release of HMD 1. 76, as well as the DOS drivers for many Thinkpad models from 1991 to 1998. Thinkpad Hardware Maintenance Diskette v1.70 - This is a read-only floppy disk image containing the original release of HMD 1.70, as well as without DOS drivers and with a different log file for looking at error messages and diagnosing problems with the hardware components on your thinkpad. There is some confusion about what diskettes to use here. The current release of HMD (2.xx) does not contain the Windows 98 CD install program, so you must use one of the original releases of HMD 1.xx or HMD 1. 70 to use that CD installer. If you do not, then the Windows 98 CD install program will not be available during installation. I have compiled all of these "read-only" diskette images as a single .iso file. A .iso file is a disk image that can be written to a CD or DVD under Linux or other *nix systems, as well as under Windows using tools such as WinCDEmu. When writing a .iso file out to a CD, you must first "burn" the image using a tool such as K3b, Graftobian's Imagination, Nero Burning ROM etc... These diskettes are created from scratch for each article. The original HMD 1.xx and HMD 1.70 diskettes were created by http://www.ifixit.com/forums/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=4720, who provided all of the information I needed to create these digests and to determine which drivers would be present on the original floppy disks for different Thinkpad models from 1991 to 1998. If you have a problem with any one of these diskettes, please download them from here and post your question as a comment on this article so that others may be able to help you. If you are looking for the original diskettes to use this system on your own Thinkpad, you may not be able to find them. I would recommend that you try the following links: http://www.areyouexperienced.org/pdfs/hardware-manuals-ibm.html http://pcsupport.about.com/od/pccomponentinformation/f/laptopsdiskette-ibm.htm These instructions should only be used if you cannot find or access your original HMD 1.xx or HMD 1. cfa1e77820
